Why tools that never upload can stay free

Web tools that compute in your browser cost their operator almost nothing per use — so they can stay free, without caps. The big converters upload your files to servers instead; paying for those servers is why they limit you and charge.

When an online converter processes your file, one of two things happens: either your file travels to their computer, or the work happens on yours.

Most big tools chose the first way. Every upload costs them bandwidth, storage, and processor time — real money that grows with every user. That cost is not a detail; it is why the daily caps, size limits, sign-up walls, and premium tiers exist. The paywall is the server bill, passed to you.

The second way — doing the work inside your own browser, on your own machine — costs the operator close to nothing per use. Modern browsers can convert images, process PDFs, and run serious computation locally. A tool built this way has no reason to cap you, and a side effect that matters more: your files never leave your device. Privacy is not a promise in a policy document; it is a property of the architecture.

This is the contract AO tools are being built on: free because the design makes free sustainable, private because there is nothing to trust — the data simply never travels.

The numbers

  • CloudConvert free tier is 10 conversions per day, 1 GB per file (official pricing page, read 2026-09-06 and again 2026-10-10)
  • remove.bg gives free users a 0.25-megapixel preview — about 625×400 pixels — while full resolution costs credits (official help pages, read 2026-09-06 and again 2026-10-10)
  • iLovePDF processes every file on its own servers and deletes it "within two hours of being processed" (iLovePDF security page, read 2026-10-10)
  • Similarweb estimated 274.5M visits a month to ilovepdf.com for July 2026; its page for September 2026 shows 280.2M under "Total Visits Last 3 Months" without saying whether that is a total or an average (Similarweb, read 2026-09-06 and 2026-10-10)
